I enjoyed Blood Rain very much. The world this book is set in is unique and intriguing, not just another Tolkein and Dungeons and Dragons rip-off like so many fantasy books are. Instead of the standard elves and dwarves, the world is peopled by several races of humans, as well as beast races: merfolk, vampire bat people, and beautiful winged people reminiscent of angels. The relationships of these different peoples to one another strongly impacts the story. The geography itself holds unexpected features like jungles with giant mushrooms, deserts made of glass, and immense underground cities.

The protagonist of the story, Mind of Mercy, is a young woman just entering adulthood. She is practically thrown head first into a quest that takes her outside her sheltered forest village, and far outside her comfort zone. She is forced to rely on people she has been taught her whole life to mistrust, and she discovers that many of her beliefs about the world and its people simply aren't true, and that everything is far more complicated than she could have fathomed. In response, she is resentful, even a bit whiny. This turned me off to her at first, until I realized how realistic, how human her reaction is. Mercy is proud, brave, confident, and stubborn, and so having her world turned upside down in this way is terrifying to her. So she pushes back, until slowly giving in and accepting her new reality, and even working to show others how wrong their ideas are. It reminds me of when I first left home for college. I met people I never would have encountered in my tiny home town, and found myself rethinking my worldview and how I judged people. It was scary and hard to deal with, but it made me grow as a person, as Mercy does. I think most of us have been through an experience like this (some of us are still going through it) and can see something of ourselves in Mercy.

The other characters also possess unique and fun personalities, from the overly daring Mirilee, to the secretive and conflicted Erebus, to Kylas, the nice guy who can't seem to stay out of trouble. Their relationships to one another are interesting, bickering every other moment but having each other's backs when it really counts. There is romance, but it's not angst-ridden like in a lot of young adult fiction, and the plot doesn't rely too heavily on it. Mercy is truly a heroine, making her own choices, and not just a princess taking orders from her prince.

I think this book would be a great read for anyone looking to get away from the usual tropes and pitfalls of fantasy novels. It would especially appeal to younger adults at the end of high school and the beginning college, moving away from being told what to believe and into viewing the world with their own eyes. It is exciting, fun, and has good character development and some inspiring moments. I look forward to reading its sequel, Blood Moon, to see where Mind of Mercy's journey will take her next.

Blood Rain Nancy Gray 9781520408378 Books Reviews

This book was selected to read for a book club I am in, and I hadn't heard much about it or the author beforehand, so I didn't have many expectations going into the book. That being said, I did enjoy it. It has a very fleshed out world so if you are into world building and like to read about different cultures, this would be a great book for you. Overall, this book had an interesting plot, and I enjoyed many aspects of it. I liked many of the supporting characters immensely, and there was some good humor throughout the book. I would say my only criticism would be this The main character, Mercy, learns a number of things that shake the fundamental beliefs she holds to be true. In my opinion, she deals with it a bit too easily. Maybe it's due to some of her supernatural-esque gifts, I am not sure, but I would have liked her to have more trouble with believing the "truth". Overall, a great read and I recommend you check it out! Lots of twists and surprises, which made it exciting to read.
Excellent read! The story grabs you right from the beginning, and it doesn't let go until the last page. Readers of fantasy will love discovering the fascinating new world within the pages. I can't wait to see what comes next.
Great book. I couldn't put it down. I really like the characters and world that Nancy has created. It is full of great twists and turns. Readers will be drawn into the story from the very first page. It is definitely one to put on your TBR list. I look forward to reading more of Nancy's books.
This was an interesting book, and I am glad I read it. It certainly exceeded my expectations for a beauty and the beast type story, which is not my favorite theme. I felt like this book succeeded in being different from many stories in this genre. Rather than defeat a "big bad" evil, surviving in a society of many diverse cultures in conflict was the greatest challenge. In order to succeed in their quest, the characters must grow to overcome their bias and distrust of other cultures. The book is part of an unfinished trilogy, and you will have to finish the series for the denouement, but it stood on its own (no cliffhanger ending).
rating Four stars - I liked it.
As the start of a new fantasy series, Blood Rain brings a lot to the table with good writing, well-developed characters, a solid amount of world-building, nice bursts of action, hints of romance, and the story itself is well paced. In particular, the development of the leads are very well done, with Mind of Mercy(or Mercy) providing an appealing lead character that is easy to root for while not being without her flaws. The novel is of a good length as well, not too long, but certainly a robust amount of content. It is an enjoyable read all the way through to the end as well as smoothly setting up the sequel and leaving the reader wanting more. As far as nitpicks go, the story has some familiar tropes/beats in it, and it has some moments of predictable romantic angst that I could do without, but the execution is excellent. Looking forward to reading more in the series.
