I have to start this with my usual admission of bias; I am a gigantic fan of this comic series so it is hard for me to not come across as a massive fanboy. However this will definitely be a more balanced review than some others.The Age of Darkness is Zenescope’s answer to the comic staple of the ‘Event’ comic, or crossover. It had done them on a smaller scale before with series such as the Dream Eater Saga, but that was not on this level. This was a game changer as it took the entire world they had created by the throat and shook it half to death.If I had a complaint with this book it would be that it is hardly one cohesive unit. This takes three of the ‘one shots’ from the series and bundles them into one volume. I can understand why they did it this way, these would not have fitted easily with the main ongoing story, but it understandably does not feel like a single story. To be honest, this is simply 3 comics from the same event, reprinted with some gallery pictures to pad it out.
This is a very difficult book to summarise; even though the issues themselves are longer than a standard comic, this is still feels like one of the shortest collections Zenescope’s have brought out, at least in terms of comic content. However the company is very fair with their pricing and I would expect that to be represented in the final version. It is however a very missable book; if you are buying the main Grimm’s Fairy Tales comic there is nothing here you need to know and with only Wonderland being an ongoing series this might be one that many choose not to pick up. It would be a shame because there are a lot of good tales in this collection, but it is its nature as a ‘collection’ rather than a continuous story that lets it down.

The "Age of Darkness" titles extend to all four of the Realms that make up the Grimm Universe, (Oz, Neverland, Wonderland and Myst), and involve almost all of the Grimm characters and especially the Realm Knights. Zenescope is building to a big Issue 100, (which is considered a real milestone). After Issue 100 the Universe will split it will continue along one line with issue 101 and will continue in a parallel but separate line in the 12 issue "Realm Wars" series.
There are three "Age of Darkness" Volumes leading us up to that milestone. Volume 1 included a one-shot that introduced the Dark Queen and then Issues 94 through 98 of Grimm Fairy Tales. Volume 2, which came out in August 2014, included three one-shots - Robyn Hood and two others. This is Volume 3, and it too is composed of three one-shots - an Oz, a Wonderland, and something called Godstorm.
So, if you want to set yourself up for Issue 100 and the following Realm Wars, the three volume set seems to be the way to go. Volume 1 seemed to be the most essential of the three Age of Darkness volumes, but Volume 3 is good, and will help you settle in.
So, what do we think of this Volume 3? Well, the Dark Queen continues to emerge as the linchpin villain. The extent of her power over the various Realms is made clear. The main players from Wonderland and Oz are identified. Teasers involving Olympus and the Gods are offered. All of this is decent Realm Wars buildup. But, what if you aren't committed to the whole Grimm plan. How do these three one-shots stand up as, well, one-shots?
The first of the the three stories, "Godstorm", revolves around Zeus and other Gods and demi-gods. It won't make much sense if you don't know the whole Universe, and it involves a lot of monologuing. I'm not sure if a casual reader will find it all that appealing. The second story, "Wonderland", brings all of the Wonderland characters up to speed, including Cassie and Violet. It is interesting and suggests that the Wonderland characters still have a lot of mileage in them. The final story, "Oz", brings that Realm into the fold and very clearly sets all of the Oz characters onto a path of destruction and ends with a brutal cliffhanger heading toward the Realm Wars. So, I guess the answer is that Volume 3 is entertaining and effective, but it is intended mostly to position everyone for the big, socko finish that's coming, and to establish suspense and uncertainty regarding the fate of some Realms.
As always, there is a tremendous range of styles represented by the drawings in these issues as well as in the narratives and the written dialogue. From story to story the look and tone, as well as the levels of graphic violence, change. To some this can be disconcerting; I like the variety, but that's pretty much a matter of individual taste.
The poster gallery at the end is a little heavy on the exaggerated bodaciousness of the female characters, even for a Grimm book, but that's a matter of taste. There's a teaser for a new Quest series that's also sort of interesting and includes some early Grimm backstory.
So, maybe the most useful summary is this - whether you are new to the Grimm Universe, a dedicated fan, or someone who dips in and out, this Volume and Volume 1, and probably to a lesser extent Volume 2, will set you up for the future of the series. And that's a nice place to be.

This volume gives us Venus, who lets us know that a war is coming, but then a war is always coming so that's no surprise. She'll have to fight that war against Zeus. It begins while Zeus is having lunch at Gyro Palace (clever touch, I thought). Fortunately, Zeus has one of his sons (Julian) on his side, although after so many deaths and rebirths Julian doesn't quite recognize his dad. No surprise because Zeus is looking pretty mortal these days.
Another story involves a chick fight in Wonderland, complete with leather crotch close-ups. Who needs a plot, really? It might all be a dream but it gives way to a different chick fight on Earth. The plot of the second fight is more about half-exposed boobs than leather crotches, but it's good to have variety.
Then we have a Wizard of Oz story with the addition of a dude who looks suspiciously like Darth Vader and a decidedly mature version of Dorothy. The edition wraps up with a cover gallery that is really more of a boobage gallery.
As is true of earlier volumes, the storytelling is interesting but inconsistent. The art, however, is of a consistently high quality. When evil forces speak, the lettering is in red and gets all wavy and strange, making it difficult to read, which is my most consistent gripe about the series. On the whole, though, I enjoyed this volume.
